That's "Girls Raised In The South" for you non-Southerners. Image hosted by Or "Girls REFINED In The South" for you non-Southernborn Southerners.

This jewel of a book was found during my library trip last week with the girls. Hubby has been reading portions of it and says that I'm a GRITS girl. I'm just wondering WHICH parts of this book he's referring to when he says that, though, 'cause I don't hold to everything in this book. However, glancing through it, I do recognize many familiar traits of mine, my upbringing, my ways of doing things, the words I use.... I'll share bits of this book with you this week, but let me start with this one which really had me chuckling.

From The GRITS Guide to Life by Deborah Ford with Edie Hand, p.143....

"You Might Be a Yankee if...
(with a special thank you to Jeff Foxworthy for the concept)

1. You don't know what a Moon Pie is.

2. You've never had grain alcohol.

3. You think Okra is short for Okrahoma. [ I'm still chuckling over this one! ]

4. You eat fried chicken with a knife and a fork.

5. You've ever been to a zoo that featured a cow or a chicken.

6. You don't see anything wrong with putting a sweater on a dog.

7. Two generations of your family have been kicked out of the same prep school in Connecticut. Hell, you're a Yankee if two generations of your family have even been to prep school.

8. You've never planned a vacation around a gun and knife show.

9. You think more money should go to important scientific research at your university than the salary of the head football coach.

10. You don't have doilies, and you certainly don't know how to make one.

11. You get freaked out when people on the street talk to you.

12. None of your fur coats are homemade."

Ok, I admit, several of these I haven't done (2 and 8) or own (12 - that one's kinda "ewwwwww") but I can relate to some of the others, especially 1, 6, and 11! No offense to any doggie-wearing-sweater owners (Juli, I love ya!) but I've never understood sweaters on dogs. Must have something to do with the extremely colder temps in the north. I'm sure your doggies love you for helping them stay warm. And 11 had me really laughing out loud because even here in the south, I still run into people that look absolutely SHOCKED if you say "Hello!" and flash them a smile while passing them on the street or in a shopping center! Can you imagine? Image hosted by

Very cute book and I'll have to get my hands on my own copy for my own personal library. I am presently bidding on one on eBay so "don't ya'll dare lay a finger on it, honey!" Pretty please, that is. I'm addicted so if you see that bidder, that'll be me.

I'll share more with ya'lls later! Oh and if any of you need me to explain what any of that is up there, like a "moon pie", ask me! Image hosted by
